Ardmore Regional Park,
at the north end under the big pavilion by the boat dock. We will operate from

Welcome to the SOARESSS Web Site |
Welcome to SOARESSS, the Southern Oklahoma Amateur Radio Emergency Service and Scientific Society.
We are a diverse group, with a history of community service to the southern
Oklahoma region. Named an A.R.R.L. Oklahoma Section "Club of the Year" for
2004, we strive to safeguard our community and improve the role that "Ham" radio
operators play.
By exploring our site, using the links at the left, you will be taken to our
news section,
where you will see some of the events we have planned for the future, as well as
memorable things in our past. You can learn about
our organization,
who we are, and some our affiliations. We also have many varied
interests
in the realm of Ham (or also called amateur) radio, those scientific endeavors
that we are interested in, etc. We also strive to have an active role in
community service
through the use of our Ham radios, our training, our time and treasure.
Additionally, we have members active in the
SKYWARN Network.
SKYWARN is a concept developed in the early 1970s that was intended to promote a
cooperative effort between the National Weather Service and communities. The
emphasis of the effort is often focused on the storm spotter, an individual who
takes a position near their community and reports wind gusts, hail size,
rainfall, and cloud formations that could signal a developing tornado. Another
part of SKYWARN is the receipt and effective distribution of National Weather
Service information.
The organization of spotters and the distribution of warning information lies
with the National Weather Service or with an emergency management agency within
the community. This agency could be a police or fire department, or often is an
emergency management/service group (what people might still think of as civil
defense groups). This varies across the country however, with local national
weather service offices taking the lead in some locations, while emergency
management takes the lead in other areas. This chapter is affiliated with the
city of Ardmores' underground Emergency Operations Center, and in association
with Emergency Management of Murray County. The Southern Oklahoma SKYWARN are
members of the Southern Oklahoma Amateur Radio Emergency Services and
Scientific Society, and are licensed radio operators.
In short, we hope to provide a way for just about anybody interested in
ham radio to GET INVOLVED, in both the hobby and their community
for the benefit of all.
